Sound Absorption – Metal Ceilings
Metal is a hard material and, depending on its design, can have various effects on sound, but it does not inherently possess any sound-absorbing properties.
Metal ceilings have other unique characteristics.
Aesthetic: Design possibilities in the choice of materials, different metals, expanded metal, surface treatments, perforations, patterns, etc.
Practical: Open area, durability, impact resistance, foldability, recyclability, etc.
To create a ceiling with good sound absorption, complementary absorbent material is required within or above the metal cassette or directly below the structural floor. Alternatively, the product can be equipped with a sound-absorbing layer.
Depending on the cassette’s design, perforation rate, choice of expanded metal, open area, and the selection of complementary sound absorber or sound-absorbing layer, the desired level of absorption can be achieved.
Sound Absorption Class C
By installing a sound-absorbing layer directly in a cassette with at least 20% open area, Sound Absorption Class C is achieved.
Sound Absorption Class A
A Class A sound absorber fully absorbs when installed above a metal cassette with at least 20% open area. The absorber can be placed directly in the cassette or below the structural floor.
Classification of absorbers according to EN-ISO 11654 is described in the Swedish standard SS 25268.
EN-ISO 11654 classifies sound absorbers into five different classes: A, B, C, D, and E. Class A absorbs the most sound, while Class E absorbs the least.
The measured absorption curve obtained in a reverberation room according to ISO 354 is assigned an absorption class based on the curve as described below.
